1- If you live outside Spain and you are going to Cuba, prepare your own aid bag with essential products.
People have written to us from around the world who are going to Cuba and who would like to cooperate with our NGO which sends aid to Cuba: Hombre Nuevo, Tierra Nueva (New Man, New Land).
How?
It's very simple. If you go through your cupboards and wardrobes you´ll find some of the things below:
- medicines (not past sell-by date).
- toiletries: soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, etc.
- school stationery: pencils, biros, notebooks, paper, pencil sharpeners, etc.
- children and teen books (not text books).
- household items: towels, sheets.
- clothes and new shoes.
- anything valuable that doesn't need money spent on.
You can write to us at: hombrenuevotierranueva@yahoo.es and we will look into ways of delivering the aid to our association in Cuba.
Many people prefer giving to people on the street when they ask for things but, as well as a matter of respect, we think that not everyone who asks for things actually needs them. We believe it is better to give out aid knowing the needs of the people and within the context of a proper aid programme.
Because of this, if you're prepared to make up your own aid bag to donate to our NGO, email us at: hombrenuevotierranueva@yahoo.es
2- Aid programmes of the NGO Hombre Nuevo, Tierra Nuevo (New Man, New Land)
a) "We´re a family"programme to sponsor children.
This programme sponsors children, old people and disabled people (physical and mental). Social work is carried out in poor districts of Havana and Santiago and in country areas. The work entails finding out people's basic necessities and then giving them what they need. The sponsor gives 12 euros a month to help people with their food or products for personal hygiene.
b) Sending of humanitarian aid to Cuba.
In the last few years, more than 10,000 kilos (22,000 lbs) of medicines have reached dispensaries run by Christian communities. These are transported by groups of tourists and university students who agree to take medicines, school stationery, toiletries, clothes, new shoes, glasses etc as part of their personal luggage on their trip to Cuba. Over the years, this group of 'benevolent ants' has managed to maintain the supply of medicines used by the NGO in the island.
c) House repair
Housing is one of the principal problems in Cuba and the deterioration of the housing stock means that some people have to live in sub-human conditions. A budget of 300 euros per house allows the partial repair of roofs, floors, kitchens, toilets, etc.
d) Helping the elderly
The NGO runs a programme of food aid for the elderly, distributing basic foodstuffs to boost their daily diet. Elderly people in Cuba are those who most suffer most from poverty, as they receive very low pensions and many lack basic resources to live.
e) Programme of micro-credits
Despite the difficulties of the Cuban system, loans of 300 euros have been made to allow the creation of small businesses run by families below the poverty line. Loans are paid back without interest by the beneficiaries in a period of time agreed with the NGO.

3- If you are travelling to Cuba, you can help us by taking aid.
Since the year 2000, our association, Hombre Nuevo, Tierra Nueva (New Man, New Land) has sent tons of humanitarian aid to Cuba with the help of hundreds of tourists and travellers.
a) How much can I take? Will I have any problems?
Depending on the airline, each passenger can take between 20 and 30 kilos of luggage. The Cuban customs allow the entry of up to 10 kg of medicines.
b) How do I collect and deliver the aid?
The NGO agrees the weight of aid you are willing to take, prepares bags accordingly and delivers it to you (in Spain). In Cuba, someone from the association will pick up the bags at an agreed place. You also will have the chance to visit our centre and get to know our aid project.
c) What is in the bags? Does the aid really reach the right people?
The bags are delivered to you and you have enough time to check them to see that they include basic humanitarian aid: medicines, toiletries, school stationery, clothes and new shoes, glasses, children's books. The aid is distributed in dispensaries run by Caritas in different areas (Havana, Santiaga, Matanzas, Sancti Spiritus, etc.) or is used in our projects (children's libraries, play centres, etc.)
